The minute they got within cell service range, Nico’s phone blew up with texts from Kai asking him to call ASAP. Nico sighed and slouched in his limo seat, glancing over at Tristan before hitting the redial button. The last few hours had been like a dream, a perfect fantasy, and he was reluctant to leave it all behind so soon. But when duty called, Nico answered.

“Where are you?” Kai snapped by way of greeting.

“Always nice talking to you too.” Nico gazed out the window at the city skyline in the distance. Several police vehicles, lights and sirens going, zoomed past them on the highway. He frowned. “What’s going on?”

“Shit hit the fan, that’s what going on.”

Nico straightened and pointed toward Tristan’s tote on the seat, then mouthed for him to check his phone. Tristan did, gasping then holding the screen out for Nico to see as well. The emergency notification there made his stomach lurch.

Bombing at remote village—area locked down until further notice.

“Christ.” Nico scrubbed a hand through his hair. One day. He took one day for himself, and the world fell apart. That would teach him. “Is it the site you suspected of being a terrorist training camp?”

“Yep. Based on the codes Hayden found embedded in Liam’s book, we think DOJO was specifically targeting Miles Arietta.”

Every muscle in Nico’s body clenched. Miles Arietta. That was a name he hadn’t heard in years. Bile rose hot in Nico’s throat. He should’ve taken that asshole out when he’d had the chance back in Afghanistan, but human decency had gotten the better of him that day. The guy had been half dead already from starvation and torture and Nico couldn’t bring himself to put a bullet in the bastard’s head too. He wouldn’t make the same mistake again. Forcing words past his constricted vocal cords, Nico growled, “Where is Arietta now?”

“Gideon and Sawyer have been going over NSA intel with Hayden for the past few hours, checking for Arietta’s last known whereabouts. They’re still trying to pinpoint his exact coordinates. After the attack though, I’d say whatever he had planned there in that village is weakened. Initial estimates say the death toll at his training camp was in the double digits. That will be a setback for him, fighter-wise. Now you answer my question.”

“What question?”

“Where the hell were you?”

Considering the apocalypse that had erupted while he was gone, Nico was in enough trouble already without lying to his boss. He told the truth, minus a few key details. “With Tristan. We went to an oasis in the desert for a few hours.”

“I see.” Kai’s tense disapproval rippled through the phone line. “And you do realize that with Arietta on the loose, he could’ve easily taken out both of you?”

“I do now,” Nico said, rubbing his eyes while guilt chewed a hole through his chest. “Look, I’m sorry we weren’t at the hotel when all this went down, but I had the situation under control, all right?”

“Well, maybe your apology will work on Tristan Mendez when he takes a bullet to the head.
